The long-awaited exciting new project in Philly is finally in the works and here’s what’s new with this grand $329 million plan.

The I-95 CAP (Central Access Philadelphia) project aims to conveniently connect Penn’s Landing to Old City. It is being funded through a combination of federal, local, and private funding sources.

This CAP will stretch between Chestnut and Walnut Streets and encompass the area between Front Street and the Delaware River, covering the space over I-95.

The park at Penn’s Landing will serve as the central focal point of the CAP project. Spanning 11.5 acres, it will be a sprawling civic space offering various amenities. According to PennDOT, the park will feature a playground, amphitheater, restaurant, garden, and potentially even an ice-skating rink.

The demolition projects for the CAP are currently underway. The first structure to be removed will be the Chestnut Street bridge and the adjacent cover over Interstate 95 between Chestnut and Sansom streets.

To facilitate this demolition, workers have already relocated The Irish and Scottish memorials, along with several other fixtures, from Chestnut Park. These memorials and fixtures are temporarily situated at Foglietta Plaza on Spruce Street and Front Street. Despite the relocation, the memorial site remains accessible to visitors and will be reinstated once the new construction is completed.

In addition to replacing the cap over I-95 between Chestnut and Sansom streets, the I-95 Central Access Philadelphia (CAP) Project will make it easier for people to walk and use different modes of transportation between Center City and the waterfront. The project has two main elements: a new park at Penn’s Landing and creating a special bridge at South Street. These changes will also help cyclists and pedestrians get to the newly finished Delaware River Trail.
